A few weeks ago, I had the most intense craving for a good glass of lemonade. I’m not really sure what sparked it, but once I was craving it it just had to happen. I had a couple of lemons in my fruit bowl, but I made a quick trip to the store to grab a few more. Not too long after that, a pitcher-full of fresh-squeezed lemonade was chilled and ready to drink!

When I took my first sip from a glass of that homemade lemonade, it really did take me back to my childhood and stir up some pretty vivid memories of day trips to the lake with my family. Back in the day, a Tupperware pitcher full of lemonade and plenty of fresh watermelon were standard lake day snacks.

My mom always made our pitchers of lemonade with a popular powdered drink mix…in fact, that powdered mix was a pantry staple at my parent’s house. I’m certain it was much easier to whip up a pitcher of drink mix than trying to juice lemons while a bunch of wild kids (I come from a litter of five) ran around a picnic table in a state park!

However, fresh-squeezed lemonade is seriously easy to make and it’s hands-down the best refreshment to beat the summer heat, in my opinion.  My kids aren’t crazy about lemonade, so it has mostly fallen off the grid of beverage choices around here for the last few years. But, I’m officially back in love with this old-fashioned favorite! So, chances are high that there will be a pitcher this goodness in my refrigerator on many of the upcoming, scorching summer days.

I make a simple syrup to sweeten up the fresh lemon juice in this recipe and I wrote this post all about making simple syrup a few years back, if you’d like to check it out. Basically, simple syrup is made by combining equal parts sugar and water and then heating the water up until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Seriously, super simple!

You could just mix lemon juice with water and then add in a cup of granulated sugar and stir. However, making a small batch of simple syrup will save you some time that you will otherwise spend stirring as you wait for that sugar to dissolve!

Enjoy the lemonade, y’all! xo -M

There’s nothing better on hot summer days than a glass of old-fashioned, fresh-squeezed lemonade!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 cup lemon juice (9-10 medium lemons)

  • 4-5 cups water (dilute to your taste)

  • Ice

Directions

  • First, make your simple syrup. Add 1 one cup of water to a small sauce pan bring it to a boil. Pour one cup of sugar into the hot water and bring the pan back to a boil. When sugar dissolves and syrup is clear (will take about 1 minute), remove pan from heat and allow syrup to cool slightly.

  • Fill a large pitcher 1/3 full with ice and pour in fresh lemon juice. Add in the cup of simple syrup and stir. Add in 4 cups of water and then taste. If the flavor is too sweet or too concentrated for your preference, add in 1 more cup of water.Β
